The All England Lawn Tennis and Croquet Club was founded in 1868 and in 1877 the Club instituted the first Lawn Tennis Championship.
Spencer Gore won the inaugural Gentleman’s Singles title that same year in front of roughly 200 spectators. Fast forward over 140 years and in 2011 the AELTC celebrated the 125th Championships and cemented its position as the oldest tennis tournament in the World.
Wimbledon stands alone in being the only Grand Slam to be played on grass and continues to be the most prestigious and revered tennis Championships.
